The1XTHRUisacalibrationfeatureusedtocalibratetimedomaininstrumentation(for
example,preemphasizedpulsegeneratorsorAWGs,arbitrarywaveformgenerators).1XTHRU
calibrationcompensatestwoerrorsourcescablelossesandgroupdelay:
CableLossesCablelossesassociatedwiththeSATA2.5plugTPA,and
itsrespectivecabling
that’sconnectedtothetestsource,consistofskinlossand,toalesserextent,dielectricloss.
Preemphasisordeemphasisisusedatthesignalsourcetocorrectforthesecablelosses.
Preemphasisisaboostofthesignalleveljustafteranedge
transition;deemphasisisa
reductioninthelowspeedamplitudeofthesignalsource.Typically,onadeemphasized
signalthelevelshavetoberesettoattainthesameoutputlevels.Resultantsignalsfrom
eitherpreemphasisordeemphasisareidenticalrelativetotheDUT.
Forthe
purposesofthisdiscussion,preemphasiswillbeused.Tosetthepreemphasis,first
determinetheamountofsignalboostbyconnectingthesignalsource,viathe1XTHRUand
therespectivecableusedtoconnecttheDUTtothesourcetoahighspeedoscilloscopeora
jittermeasurement
device.Triggertheoscilloscopeorjittermeasurementdeviceusinga
triggerfromthesource.Thetrigger,asingleevent,indicatesthestartofthesignalbeing
senttotheDUT.Adjustpreemphasistomaximizetheeyeopening.
GroupDelayGroupdelayistheseconderrorsourcefor
1XTHRUcalibration.Whenthe
DUTgeneratesanoutputsignal,itcanbeusedtomeasuredelay.Tocreateabaselinedelay
measurement,connecttheoutputsignalcabletotheinputsignalcableandthe1XTHRU.To
determinecorrectedDUTdelay,subtractthisbaselinemeasurementfromtheDUTdelay
measurements.

